Science inevitably involves ethical discussions about how research should be implemented. However such discussions often neglect the potential unethical treatment of a third party: the research assistant. Extensive anecdotal evidence suggests that research assistants can experience unique physical, psychological, and social risks when implementing their typical responsibilities. Moreover, these research assistants, who perhaps engage in research experience to bolster their curricula vitae, may feel coerced to continue to work in unsafe environments out of fear of losing rapport with the research (...) supervisor or letters of recommendation for their future endeavors. In the present article, we address two important issues regarding the ethical treatment of research assistants. First, we present evidence suggesting that research assistants may experience substantive risk when implementing their assigned responsibilities. Second, we propose a document, the "Research Assistant's Bill of Rights," as a possible ethics code for people supervising research assistants. This document is independent from typical institutional review board processes, and it has the potential to maximize benefits to research supervisors and research assistants. (shrink)

Background Our objective was to evaluate whether the description of a machine learning (ML) app or brain imaging technology to predict the onset of schizophrenia or alcohol use disorder (AUD) influences healthcare professionals’ judgments of stigma, empathy, and compassion. Methods We randomized healthcare professionals (N = 310) to one vignette about a person whose clinician seeks to predict schizophrenia or an AUD, using a ML app, brain imaging, or a psychosocial assessment. Participants used scales to measure their judgments of stigma, (...) empathy, and compassion. Results Participants randomized to the ML vignette endorsed less anger and more fear relative to the psychosocial vignette, and the brain imaging vignette elicited higher pity ratings. The brain imaging and ML vignettes evoked lower personal responsibility judgments compared to the psychosocial vignette. Physicians and nurses reported less empathy than clinical psychologists. Conclusions The use of predictive technologies may reinforce essentialist views about mental health and substance use that may increase specific aspects of stigma and reduce others. (shrink)

Background and AimsEnd-of-life discussions can be difficult for seriously ill adolescents and young adults. Researchers aimed to determine whether completing Voicing My CHOiCES —a research-informed advance care planning guide—increased communication with family, friends, or health care providers, and to evaluate the experience of those with whom VMC was shared.MethodsFamily, friends, or HCPs who the AYAs had shared their completed VMC with were administered structured interviews to assess their perception of the ACP discussion, changes in their relationship, conversation quality, and whether (...) the discussion prompted changes in care. Open-ended responses underwent thematic analysis.ResultsOne-month post-completion, 65.1% of AYA had shared VMC completion with a family member, 22.6% with a friend, and 8.9% with an HCP. Among a sample of respondents, family and friends reported a positive change in their relationship with the AYA. Participant descriptions of the experience fell into five themes: positive experience, difficult experience, appreciated a guide to facilitate discussion, provided relief, and created worry/anxiety. Only 1 HCP noted a treatment change. Family, friends, and HCP did not think the AYA would have discussed EoL preferences without completing VMC.ConclusionsVMC has potential to enhance communication about ACP between AYA and their family and friends, though less frequently with HCPs. Participants reported a positive change in their relationship with the AYA after discussing VMC, and described experiencing the conversation as favorable, even when also emotionally difficult. Identifying the determinants of human behavior is useful to adjust interventions and lead the civil society toward a stronger commitment to climate change mitigation and adaptation objectives, achieving greater support for successfully implementing environmental policies. Existing research has largely focused on case studies of pro-environmental behaviors in developed economies but there is very little evidence for developing countries. This study provides estimations of the effect of internal factors, such as sociodemographic variables, and four psychological dimensions on PEBs. Data were obtained (...) through a survey applied with future decision makers – university students – from Colombia and Nicaragua. Indices were generated for PEBs and the psychological dimensions using z-scores and Principal Component Analysis. Partial correlations were evaluated through the Ordinary Least Squares method. Our results suggest that, in order to reach the planned emission reduction targets, policy approaches should more strongly focus on educating and motivating citizens and prepare them for contributing to the environmental cause, as well as provide individual solutions to combat CC, rather than providing only information on its causes and consequences. Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu możliwości przemiany moralnej w teorii Arystotelesa. Arystoteles twierdził, że cnota dostępna jest jedynie dla tych, którzy otrzymali już właściwe wychowanie i których charakter został odpowiednio ukształtowany. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, że koncepcja funkcjonowania ludzkiej psychiki stworzona przez psychoanalityk Karen Horney jest spójna z teorią Arystotelesa, a jednocześnie umożliwia nam dostrzeżenie możliwości przemiany moralnej. Zmiana ta dokonuje się przez poznanie i zrozumienie własnych emocji i uczuć.

The problem of morals is closely related to the problem of human goodness. In defining the essence of virtue it is essential, according to the ethicians of virtue, to disclose, what is human goodness, i. e. to achieve the ideal of goodness and to define it. Closely related to the question What is goodness? is the question How can we achieve the goodness and what is the role of virtue in achieving this goodness? The ethics of virtue changed the perspective (...) of viewing the morality and its place in human life in that it focused on moral incentives and moral grounds. The mora_lity does not put unjustified claims on humans any more. It takes into account the natural selfinterestedness of humans, taking it as morally justified tendency. The ethics of virtue enables humans to perceive themselves as natural parts of the equilibrium between their own interests and the interests of the others, making the explanation of the relationship between the selfinterest and morality more plausible. In this article, I examine the relation of religious language and public debate within the context of postsecularism and defend a falsificationist model. I argue that the postsecular public sphere ought to problematize four characteristics of modern thinking; the exclusion of truth and religious language, the asymmetry between religious and secular language, the essentialization of the secular and the religious and, lastly, the exclusivity and exhaustiveness of the secular and religious as categories. Based on these four problematizations, I defend a (...) falsificationist model for the admission of religious language in the public sphere and argue that we ought to allow citizens the right to use the language of their choice in the public sphere, provided that they also provide in their preferred language ‘conditions of falsifiability’, that is, those circumstances upon which the speaking party would accept their argumentation as void. Developmental coordination is vital in the temporally coordinated appearance of cell types within the precise spatial architecture of the vertebrate brain and this, combined with the rich interplay between the developing brain and its target organs, is a biological problem of monumental complexity. An example is the genesis and subsequent integration of the neuroendocrine hypothalamus and the pituitary. Two recent papers(1,2) use the developing hypothalamo‐pituitary axis in order to gather a deeper understanding of these integrative mechanisms. In addition, they show (...) that a sub‐family of homeodomain factors, the POU‐domain proteins, play a critical role in coordinating the respective ontogenies of the hypothalamus and the pituitary. Prominent sociologist and political scientist O. Bochkovsky paid much attention to issues related to the phenomenon of the nation. Olgert Bochkovsky's legacy is of interest precisely given its present nature. A few decades ago, his work was banned precisely because of its salient themes. "The struggle of peoples for national liberation", "National affairs" and other works of the scientist require detailed research today. In them Bochkovsky addresses the topic of nation-building, where he examines its main and essential aspects.

The paper examines the relationship between ethics and the principle of authenti_city, focusing on two fundamental questions: What is it, what distorts today the ideal of authenticity and how to differentiate between morally responsible forms of self-determination and other ways of modern searching for authenticity? The author follows Taylor’s conception of authenticity. On one hand Taylor is not wil_ling simply to reject the diagnosis of the conservative critics of modernity. He shares their idea, that it was the modernity, which made (...) the dynamic of ongoing social individualization and purpose-made rationalization possible. The consequence, however, is, among other things, a challenge to our moral certainties. On the other hand Taylor does not to be an adherent of antimodernism. Acoording to him the background of contemporary occurrences is also the ideal of authenticity, which could be attributed a moral role and which seems to break down the value relativism from inside.
